"Tiananmen Mission" is a historical film about the 1989 Tiananmen Student Movement in China. It promotes courage, dignity, and freedom through the story of one young man: Zhan Jiang—a 17-year-old student leader during the movement in Tiananmen Square. He survived three bullets during the massacre on June 4, 1989, and had been in hiding for 16 years when his story was recorded. His personal account about the massacre and China is one of the most authentic Chinese narratives, and his moving journey to freedom is a great inspirational history. An in-person question-and-answer session with filmmaker Lillian Zheng will follow this screening.

| 1:00 PM | Exhibit: Amoxtlis Amoxtlis—the Nahuatl word for “codices”—centers Sánchez’s large-scale printmaking practice, which draws from the visual language of Mesoamerican codices while engaging the cultural and political conditions of the U.S.–Mexico border. At the heart of the installation is Codex Tonalpohualli, a series of towering printed banners that reference the twenty day signs of the divinatory calendar of the sun. In this calendar, time unfolds through cycles of thirteen days associated with birth and renewal. Sánchez translates this structure into an immersive environment: carved wooden codices are printed in red and black ink on monumental sheets of paper measuring sixteen feet high. Suspended from ceiling to floor, the banners surround the viewer, creating a dense vertical landscape that evokes a forest of signs and symbols. The exhibition also includes video work, eight large-scale carved wooden sculptures, and a mural created on the gallery wall during the exhibition’s run. These elements extend Sánchez’s exploration of narrative image-making across multiple forms, from print and sculpture to moving image and architectural intervention. Throughout the installation, references to popular culture intersect with mythic imagery and historical forms of knowledge transmission. Sánchez describes his work as “pop-multiculture,” a hybrid language shaped by the movement of people, images, and ideas across borders. Working across printmaking, sculpture, drawing, performance, and graphic design, he brings together references from pre-Columbian codices, contemporary Chicano visual culture, and mass media. His imagery reflects the layered histories that connect Mexico and the United States, while addressing the political and human realities that define the border today.

Chaos is the order of the day at her new school, where most of the teachers are worn to a frazzle and the students are just as frustrated with their teachers. When Mr. Che, the coach of the girls’ soccer team sees Mona’s soccer skills, he puts her on the team. Although they are training for an upcoming tournament for all of Berlin’s schools, the team is anything but harmonious. Mona is singled-out and is blamed for the team’s troubles. With the tournament quickly approaching, they realize that if they want to win, they must stop fighting, treat each other as equals, and learn the true meaning of teamwork. Participants will explore dough development, gluten structure, and the rhythmic pulling technique that transforms a simple mixture of flour, water, and salt into long, elastic strands of noodles. The class culminates in assembling a complete dish, pairing freshly pulled noodles with a deeply flavored, adaptable sauce. Chinese pulled noodles trace their origins back over 4,000 years, with early evidence found during the Han Dynasty. Lā miàn, meaning “pulled noodles,” became especially prominent in Northern China, where wheat-based foods dominate. Over time, noodle-making evolved into both a culinary craft and a performance art, with skilled chefs stretching dough into hundreds of strands in a matter of seconds. Come learn about the extraordinary artistry and cultural significance of African spoons depicted in this captivating book. This beautifully crafted book explores how these masterfully carved utensils transcend their practical purpose to become profound expressions of artistic excellence and cultural identity. Stunning photography and detailed analysis reveal the intricate designs, symbolic meanings, and historical contexts of these remarkable artifacts. This comprehensive work illuminates the sophisticated artistic traditions of African craftspeople while exploring the intersection of functionality and aesthetic beauty. Ulevitch has collected African spoons for over 30 years, dating primarily from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 2025, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento mounted an exhibition of the collection, the most comprehensive display of these objects to date. Ulevitch is a professor emeritus at Scripps Research where he served for over 50 years and his research transformed our understanding of the immune system.
