7:30 PM | Author Talk: Kim Fay Warwick’s presents Kim Fay as she discusses and signs her new book, Kate & Frida: A Novel of Friendship, Food, and Books. Born in Seattle and raised all over Washington State, Kim Fay is the author of the national bestseller Love & Saffron and Edgar Award-nominated The Map of Lost Memories. A former independent bookseller, she lived for many years in Vietnam, the inspiration for Communion: A Culinary Journey Through Vietnam. Fay now lives in Los Angeles with her musician husband, Jim Vitale, and their dog, Mabel.
About the book: Twentysomething Frida Rodriguez arrives in Paris in 1991, relishing the city's butter-soaked cuisine and seeking her future as a war correspondent. But then she writes to a bookshop in Seattle, and receives more than just the book she requests. A friendship begins that will redefine the person she wants to become.
Seattle bookseller Kate Fair is transformed by Frida's free spirit, spurred to believe in herself as a writer, to kiss her handsome coworker, and to find beauty even in loss. Through the most tumultuous years of their young lives—personally and globally—Kate and Frida sustain and nourish each other as they learn the necessity of embracing joy, especially through our darkest hours.
This mouthwatering oasis of a novel is a love letter to bookshops and booksellers, to the passion we bring to life in our twenties, and to the last precious years before the internet changed everything.

Shakespeare Character Workshop The San Diego Shakespeare Society is offering a unique opportunity for the dedicated student of the Bard to dig most deeply into the humanity of the plays. Rather than be satisfied with rote recitation of text, this guided workshop will enable its participants to explore the characters intimately and to determine to what extent they may identify with them.
Which Shakespeare character are you?
The play "Hamlet" takes place in Denmark with a specific group of Danes, but the drama of "Hamlet" is not bounded by time or place—it is universal. There are "Hamlets" from Shanghai to San Diego. The characters of the canon live in us, and each person realizes these characters in unique and wonderful ways. This workshop will be a chance to share how you have identified with Shakespeare’s characters.
Beforehand, participants will be asked to think back over their lives as to which Shakespeare characters they have strongly empathized with and the reasons therefor. Do certain lines spin in your mind over and over again? Are there passages from Shakespeare you keep returning to? Try to write at least a paragraph about this and bring your “homework” to the workshop. Please copy and paste any memorable Shakespeare passages to your sheet and bring it to the gathering.

4:00 PM | Author Talk: Sharon Kurtzman Warwick's presents Sharon Kurtzman as she discusses her debut novel, The Lost Baker of Vienna, in conversation with Rachel McMillan. Sharon Kurtzman worked in television marketing before pursuing her dream of becoming a writer. She earned her MFA in fiction from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. The Lost Baker of Vienna was inspired by the war and postwar experiences of her own family, who were Holocaust survivors. Kurtzman lives in North Carolina with her husband; they have two adult children.
An historical novel inspired by the experiences of the author's own family after the Holocaust, a sweeping saga about survival, loss, love, and the reverberating effects of war
In 2018, Zoe Rosenzweig is reeling after the loss of her beloved grandfather, a Holocaust survivor. She becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to her family during the war.
Vienna, 1946: Chana Rosenzweig has endured the horrors of war to find herself, her mother, and her younger brother finally free in Vienna. But freedom doesn't look like they'd imagined it would, as they struggle to make a living and stay safe.
Despite the danger, Chana sneaks out most nights to return to the hotel kitchen where she works as a dishwasher, using the quiet nighttime hours to bake her late father's recipes. Soon, Chana finds herself caught in a dangerous love triangle, torn between the black-market dealer who has offered marriage and protection, and the apprentice baker who shares her passions. How will Chana balance her love of baking against her family's need for security?
The Lost Baker of Vienna affirms the unbreakable bonds of family, shining a light on the courageous spirit of WWII refugees as they battle to survive the overwhelming hardships of a world torn apart.
