Talk: San Diego Women & Chinese Men: Bridging Cultures, 1882-1922

San Diego History Center, Balboa Park, San Diego

Discussions, Talks, Panels & Forums

In a time of fierce anti-Chinese attitudes and legislation, mainly male migrants from China regularly faced hostility as they sought to make a living in the US. As teachers, missionaries, domestic employers and customers, women were often these migrants’ earliest contacts, wielding considerable power to change this picture. This talk will uncover specific stories from San Diego where women played outsized roles in the lives of migrant men and pay tribute to individuals from both groups who would otherwise remain little known or nameless.
