09/15/2018 - Chinese Historical Museum World in Porcelain Opening
This collection highlights the fascination Europeans had with technically sophisticated "Fine China," beginning in the mid-1500s during the Ming Dynasty until the early 1800s and the Qing Dynasty. Porcelain, from an Italian word, was a ceramic high-fire ware developed in China about 2,000 years ago. According to Christie's Auction House, "'Made in China' was once the ultimate mark of sophistication for Western porcelain enthusiasts. Chinese export porcelain was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as Chinese Imperial porcelain, but designed to Western taste." Designs were of both Chinese and Western motifs.

The Museum will first celebrate with a 3 PM reception at the Chuang Archive and Learning Center. Attendees will then walk over to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Extension at 328 J Street to be the first to view the exclusive porcelain pieces spanning three centuries of trade history.

Learn about the manufacturing process of porcelain that was held in secret by Chinese artisans at our exhibition, which will run from September 15, 2018 to January 19, 2019.

07/01/2018 - Arts Of South And Southeast Asia
The San Diego Museum of Art presents Arts of South and Southeast Asia.

Pieces in the exhibit range in date from the first to the nineteenth century AD. The earliest works are mostly religious, relating to the ritual practices of Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism. Although each religion has a distinct set of gods and divinities, all three based the iconography of these figures on the human form.

During a series of invasions and migrations in the eleventh century, people from Central Asia moved into Pakistan and northern India. They brought India a new literary language, Persian, and Islam. By the end of the fifteenth century, European traders and missionaries began arriving by sea. They, in addition to goods, also brought oil paintings and engravings. These cultural influences thrived alongside traditions stemming from the region's native languages, literatures, and religions, which continue to flourish.

During the military dictatorship of Chile (1973-90), over one million Chileans fled the country to escape political repression and economic crises.

This event centers Chilean women artists who came to the United States during this time.
