01/19/2018 - Gallery: Art of the AmericasLearn about the pre-Columbian objects presented in "Art of the Americas" from Dr. Janet Esser, art historian, and Professor Emerita of San Diego State University. Dr. Esser has lived in Peru and Mexico, has published books and articles in Mexico and in the United States. She has presented many professional papers written extensively on ethnographically ancient, contemporary, and personal adornment. Dr. Esser is especially interested in the art of the ingenious peoples who occupied the Americas long before the arrival of Europeans. She has also focused her attention on the work of these cultures's descendants who, though often poor and dispossessed, continue to produce work rich in intelligence and inspired with energy. 12/01/2017 - Discussion: Krampus Comes to New Americans MuseumCould Krampus be a New American? This creature of European holiday folklore is popular in the Alpine regions of Europe and is celebrated with Krampus Parades on the fifth of December: the day before St. Nicholas's Feast Day.
Krampus customs have recently been adopted in Southern California and on December 1, the Krampus will be visiting NAM during Friday Night Liberty!
We are very excited to be hosting the Krampus expert, Al Ridenour: Executive Director of Krampus Los Angeles and author of The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas: Roots and Rebirth of the Folkloric Devil.
Mr. Ridenour will be sharing with us the origins and traditions of this European "Christmas devil," and the work of Krampus Los Angeles--the first troupe of its kind to bring the Krampus to Southern California. The evening will be highlighted by a visit from the Krampus himself!
