6:00 PM Book Signing: Jean Guerrero Join KPBS journalist Jean Guerrero and Los Angeles Times reporter Richard Marosi for a stimulating conversation about her PEN-award-winning book, Crux: A Cross-Border Memoir, and the most important 2018 U.S.-Mexico border stories, from family separations to the Trump administration's response to the caravan.

Crux is about Guerrero's quest to understand her charismatic and troubled Mexican father, who crosses borders between countries, between madness and sanity, and more.

Jean Guerrero is an Emmy-winning investigative border and immigration reporter for KPBS in San Diego. She contributes to NPR, PBS, PRI's The World and other public media. She has been recognized by the San Diego Press Club and the Society for Professional Journalists.

Richard Marosi is a two-Time Pulitzer Prize finalist whose investigative reporting on Mexico's most vulnerable populations has led to improved conditions for them on both sides of the border.

7:30 PM Stage: The Year to Come Every New Year's Eve a family gathers in their Florida backyard to ring in the coming year. In between dips in the pool, politically incorrect banter and a highly-anticipated onion dip, their relationships grow and fracture in moments that become family legend. Unfolding backwards in time, The Year to Come shows how the promise of our future is shaped by the lens of our past. Rising playwright Lindsey Ferrentino introduces us to a distinctly American family whose evolution mirrors the turbulence of the 21st century.

Admission/Cost: $35 - $92

Location:
La Jolla Playhouse

7:30 PM Comedy: Rex Naverrete Navarrete gathers all of his material from what he calls "real Rex moments," reality and shared life experiences. "I think everything has humor; you will always find humor. I don't always make stuff up. Even though most of my material is geared for a Filipino audience, if you're smart enough you'll understand the universality of it. Look at the comedy traditions of Jewish and African American comics, which are now the mainstream through Seinfeld, Bruce, Allen, Rock, Pryor and Murphy. Our struggles become our comedy."
