All Day 2018 San Diego Asian Film Festival Pacific Arts Movement (Pac Arts) is thrilled to present the 19th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF), the largest platform of Asian cinema on the west coast, from November 8-17, 2018. In its largest iteration yet, SDAFF will present over 160 films from 20 countries in 28 languages showcasing the best in both award-winning and cutting-edge cinema from Asia, Asian America and around the world.

This year, Pac Arts is adding Asian cuisine to the movie-goer experience, partnering with local San Diego restaurants to bring food featured in the films to festival attendees before and after the opening and closing night films!

"Expanding the world of the films to include San Diego cuisine is directly tied to our mission of telling the stories of Asian Americans and connecting them with lives here," says Pac Arts Artistic Director Brian Hu.

All San Diegans are welcome to attend the festival and experience some of the best Asian films of the year!

Admission/Cost: $12 per screening, Opening and Closing Films $40 - Multi-film and Festival Passes available

3:30 PM Lecture: Healthcare Integration in Rural Philippines This talk will present two case studies that are illustrative of the importance of how to "do" development interventions and, specifically, how to make "appropriate" technological transfers from one cultural setting to another, whilst helping to strengthen local social infrastructure.

The transfer of technology from the global north to low-income settings has remained an irrefutable and beneficent cornerstone of international development and foreign aid since the advent of the Truman Doctrine in 1947. Yet, the success in adoption and sustainability of these technological transfers has often been weak, at best, and dangerous, at worst. This research examines how the seemingly irrefutable beneficent development of birthing clinics with skilled birthing attendants throughout the rural Philippines in combination with the eradication of the training of traditional birth attendants (TBA) has resulted in a dangerous situation that threatens to reverse the successful reductions in maternal and infant mortality established since TBA trainings began from UNICEF and WHO in the 1950s. This case example is illustrative of the central importance in determining how to "do" development and, specifically, how to make "appropriate" technological transfers from one cultural setting to another.

This discussion will be relevant to students of healthcare, engineering, peace and justice scholars and others interested in emerging scholarship which is being developed at the intersection of these disciplines.

5:00 PM 7th Annual Taiwan Film Showcase For the 7th year in a row, the San Diego Asian Film Festival presents the Taiwan Film Showcase, the largest annual presentation of Taiwanese cinema outside of Asia. Every year, the Showcase highlights the diversity of perspectives, languages, stories and genres by feature-length and short filmmakers in Taiwan today. And for the first time, we are adding virtual reality films to the program by highlighting two short works from Taiwan that use new technology to explore history and traditional beliefs. The films expand not just how stories can be told, but how we can envision culture altogether.

8:00 PM Music: Lúcia Menezes Lúcia Menezes was born in Itapipoca, a small town in the northeast of Brazil, and has built a solid career as a performer and recording artist. Her intimate interpretations and flexible voice deliver so much feeling that a unique sound is created. Lucia was nominee in the category "best singer" in the 2008 "Brazilian Music Awards" (the Brazilian Grammy).

On her latest release Lucia, by Biscoito Fino Records, you can perceive her search for new sounds without losing the respect for traditional Brazilian music and its most imposing artists. The icing on the cake is with two very special duets with legends Chico Buarque and Miucha on the songs "Desencontro" and "Sonho de Marinheiro."

According to journalist Sérgio Cabral, "Lucia builds a bridge between the northeast and the southeast through her recordings, singing what is best and available in both regions." Her repertoire reflects memories and rhythms from her homeland, like frevo e forró, with Nando Duarte on 7-string guitar, Gee Rabe on accordion, Ted Falcon on violin and mandolin and Clarice Cast on percussion.
