10:00 AM Indigo Dye & Shibori Workshop Instructor: Lauren Becker Downey | For those passionate about Indigo dye and resist work, this is your opportunity to play and experiment. The Indigo plant makes a variety of shades of blue, commonly associated with denim. Explore the many possibilities of magical Indigo dyeing with bold and beautiful Shibori, the ancient Japanese art of dyeing natural fabrics and using resist techniques~ folding, clamping, stitching, twisting and compressing. Bring your clean 100% natural fibers; cotton, silk, hemp, bamboo or rayon clothing or fabric to dye; scarves, t-shirts, runners, tote bags, bandanas or smaller pieces of fabric. Since the dye bath will be good for several days - please join us again the following day for the Alumni Indigo Dye Studio to continue the fun. Please register in advance.

10:30 AM Talk: The History & Science of Kimchi Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “The History and Science of Kimchi,” featuring Hae Jung Cho, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium. Cho will describe the national food of Korea and the many ways it is prepared and served at each meal. She will also explore kimchi’s mysteries " why it is buried in the ground, for example; and demonstrate how to make the most popular type of this most popular food. Hae Jung Cho has been a professional cook since 2003. Trained as a master food preserver, Hae Jung has been teaching people how to make kimchi and other ferments since 2011, and has a Facebook group called “Hae Jung’s Kimchi Club.” She is a founding and executive committee member of the Slow Food Preservers Los Angeles and a newbie gardener at the Crenshaw Community Garden. The event is free and open to the public.

1:00 PM Book Signing: Cindy Henson Meet Cindy Henson on Local Author Day. A mysterious illness changed the course of Cindy’s life. She was forced to give up her project-managing ways and instead listen to that small voice inside of her that was calling her to a different place", a different way of being. That voice called her to Costa Rica, where she earned her master’s in International Peace and Conflict Studies. Cindy wrote a book about her journey, called Jungle: A Journey to Peace, Purpose, and Freedom. Cindy lives in San Diego and works with nonprofits, government agencies, and triple-bottom-line organizations to increase the positive difference they are making in the world.

1:00 PM Author Talk: Abdi Nazemian The Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Branch Library is proud to present Abdi Nazemian to speak about his newest book, "Like a Love Story", Co-Sponsored by the Persian Cultural Center.

Abdi Nazemian is the author of "Like a Love Story" and "The Authentics". His novel, "The Walk-In Closet", won the Lambda Literary Award for LGBT Debut Fiction.

His screenwriting credits include the films "The Artist's Wife", "The Quiet", and "Menendez: Blood Brothers", and the NBC television series "The Village". He has been an executive producer and associate producer on numerous films, including "Call Me By Your Name", "Little Woods", "The House of Tomorrow" and "Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood".

Join award-winning dancer, choreographer, and producer Lakshmi Basile ("La Chimi") for a night of electrifying Spanish music and dance. The first non-Spanish winner of the 2011 Concurso de las Minas de La Unión, Basile’s emotive, inspired dancing was described by poet and flamencologist Félix Grande as "a heart-wrenching homage to the romantics of classic flamenco."
