9:00 AM - 11:00 PM Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow Join the San Luis Rey Band of Luiseño Mission Indians for the Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow with arts-and-crafts booths, food, dancers, drums, an opportunity drawing and contest dancing.

Presented free to the public by the San Luis Rey Mission Indian Foundation, the 22nd Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow will feature parades, dancing, drumming, storytelling, arts and crafts, and food for sale. The Inter-Tribal Powwow is one of the largest in the region and is the only one presented on the grounds of a California mission. It draws participant from 15+ tribes, including the Diegueño tribe and Luiseño bands in San Diego County, as well as tribes from California, the Southwest and beyond.

The highlight of the powwow is the Grand Entry (staged at noon, 7:00 PM, and 8:00 PM on Saturday, and at noon on Sunday), in which dancers in traditional native dress enter the grounds in a parade formation. No pictures are allowed during the sacred entry, but the public is encouraged to join the parade by drumming, dancing and marching.

Throughout each day, men, women and youth dancers will participate in intertribal competition dancing (fancy shawl, jingle, grass, hoop and traditional styles) and drumming. Vendors will sell Native arts and crafts, and food booths will sell burgers, hot dogs, Indian tacos and fry bread.

During the last few years fashion designers have embraced our designs and we've seen them used on clothing on famous fashion runways and magazines like Vogue. Come and join us in our first two-day workshop and create a sampler of stitches and designs!

Price is $45 ($10 for Ridna Shkola students) for two days. Includes all materials.

For adults and kids seven years old and up.

7:30 PM Songs for Social Justice The Pilgrim United Church of Christ will host a diverse and talented lineup this year! Robert Perry will keep the show on track as Master of Ceremonies. Peggy Watson is a long-time Folk Heritage favorite, and newly-made political activist. For this show, she's teaming with Gemini Junction to bring us some original songs and fantastic harmonies. Elizabeth Schwartz is the dynamic leader (with husband Yale Strom) of Hot Pstromi. She has earned a reputation as the Edith Piaf of klezmer music. Here we get a rare chance to hear her with minimal accompaniment, allowing her voice to shine through. Joey Pearson, from Star Search to Pilgrim Church, he brings his R&B spirituality to our show for the second year. Darius Degher is a man of the world; he currently writes (and publishes) poetry, teaches at a Swedish university, and serves on the Encinitas Traffic and Public Safety Commission with an emphasis on bicycling. This is his first Folk Heritage performance. You'll appreciate his deft guitar work and well-honed songwriting skills. And more!
