1:00 PM Opera on the Concourse: Rigoletto San Diego Opera is proud to announce the return of Opera on the Concourse, a series of free lunchtime concerts held for the public on the San Diego Civic Concourse with the stars of San Diego Opera's season. Discontinued in 2007, the program returned in 2015, and attracts over 300 spectators per performance in a fun and casual concert recital. Opera on the Concourse continues San Diego Opera's mission of providing accessible performances to the community. These free concerts, which start at noon and are roughly 45 minutes long, feature arias, duets, and ensembles from opera and popular musicals, picked by each of the performing artists and accompanied by piano.

5:00 PM Film: The Judge Join Ambassador Diana Lady Dougan, Peabody Award winning filmmaker, and Executive Producer of "The Judge," for a special screening on February 6 at UCSD's Robinson Auditorium.

"The Judge" is a timely and captivating film about Kholoud Al-Faqih, the first woman to become a Shari'a Law judge in the Middle East. The film engages and surprises both Muslims and non-Muslims as it takes audiences on Kholoud's journey of controversy, perseverance and stunning courage.

With unprecedented access to Shari'a court in session, the film holds nothing back as it captures the heated and deeply rooted opposition among women as well as men in this break from centuries old culture and tradition.

Judge Kholoud has already become an inspiring role model far beyond her country of Palestine. Her appointment was not only historic, but it embodies so many aspects of inter-faith and cross-cultural perceptions and misconceptions about women and the law far beyond Islam.

There will be a thought-provoking panel discussion and reception following the screening. This event is free and open to the public.

Age limit: 18+

Admission/Cost: FREE

Robinson Auditorium

5:00 PM Film & Talk: 49,172: The Rescue of Bulgaria's Jews Please join the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program and UC San Diego Library for a film screening and talk by Atanas Kolev.

Saving the entire Jewish minority in Bulgaria is an extraordinary act of humanism and yet unbeknownst to many. In this documentary, a handful of U.S.-based Bulgarian filmmakers embark on a journey to discover how the country was able to shield their Jewish community from deportation and execution. Drawing on private and public archives in the U.S., Israel and Bulgaria, the film depicts a mosaic of faces and stories woven together by the courage and resourcefulness of individuals in both powerful and powerless positions. The screening will be followed by a conversation with producer Atanas Kolev.
