The Favorite

Favorite

Set amid the outrageous aristocratic excesses of 18th century royals, The Favourite is a dark yet comic story about three hugely commanding women jockeying with raw abandon for love, favor and power. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving at court. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), who has given birth to 17 infants but has no living heir, occupies the throne; her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz), an expert strategist and powerful personality, governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health and capricious temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm and intelligence catch Sarah's attention, and she makes Abigail her protégé. Ambitious to get ahead, Abigail finds ways to make herself valuable to the Queen, and soon grows into a dangerous rival to Sarah. Abigail will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way. Directed by international bad boy Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer). Winner of the Special Grand Jury Prize and Best Actress Prize (Colman) at the Venice Film Festiva Official Movie Site

Now showing in multiple theaters in the San Diego area.
