Talk: Why We Fight

Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, University of San Diego , San Diego

Social Justice and Human Rights

Join us for the Distinguished Lecture Series hosted by the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. Acclaimed expert on violence and seasoned peacebuilder, Chris Blattman, will discuss his new book, Why We Fight: The Roots of War and the Paths to Peace.

In today’s world, it’s easy to forget that most of the time, violence doesn’t happen; that peace is the norm. From countries, to street gangs, ethnic groups to religious sects, hostile rivalries are everywhere. Yet, only a fraction of the time do these erupt into violence.

Why We Fight draws on decades of economics, political science, psychology, and real-world interventions to lay out the root causes and remedies for war, showing that violence is rare; that there are only five reasons why conflict wins over compromise; and how peacemakers turn the tides through tinkering, not transformation.

The first 150 guests to arrive will receive a free hardcover copy of Dr. Blattman's new book, Why We Fight: The Roots of War and the Paths to Peace.
