11:00 AM - 3:00 PM San Pasqual Battle Day Reenactment Commemorating the 1846 Battle of San Pasqual of the Mexican-American war with battle reenactment, military encampment, food and entertainment.
In the San Pasqual Valley southeast of Escondido, in the darkness of early morning on December 6, 1846, the American Army under Stephen Watts Kearny fought the bloodiest encounter to win California from Mexico. General Kearny and his 120 or so member Army of the West had just arrived from Missouri by way of New Mexico. Dreary, hungry, wet, and cold, they met and were defeated by a smaller force of Californios led by General Andres Pico who were waiting there to stop them from joining other American militants.

Suffering over 35 dead or wounded during the battle and under siege on Mule Hill, only the midnight escape by Kit Carson, Edward Beale, and an unnamed Indian averted their outright slaughter. The combined American force led by Commodore Robert Stockton then went on to win the Battle of San Gabriel on January 8 and January 9, 1847.

The San Pasqual battle was only one of the military encounters in California in the war, but it proved to be the bloodiest and most controversial as to the outcome. Today, a California State Monument commemorates the battlefield, and hundreds of volunteers reenact the event there on the Sunday closest to December 6.

12:00 PM Exhibition: Protest Posters from AIM to DAPL More than 40 compelling graphics documenting a half century of political action-from, roughly, the occupation of Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay to violent protests over the Dakota Access Pipeline in Standing Rock-are brought together by this exhibition. Taken together, these prints demonstrate the urgency of challenges faced not only by contemporary Native Americans, but by North Americans as a whole. The exhibition includes images by both well-known indigenous artists as well as by anonymous, spontaneous poster makers. From beautifully silkscreened images to print-on-demand files, this display suggests the widest conceivable variety of work made to confront an equally wide array of crises.

2:00 PM Music: Allison Adams Tucker Given four stars by DownBeat Magazine and described by the Examiner as "lustrous in any language - a vocalist who clarifies every note within a hair's breath," multi-lingual vocalist Allison Adams Tucker creates a unique musical postcard with jazz-inspired songs that span countries and genres in six languages, from Cole Porter to Tom Jobim, the Beatles to Sting.

Allison has come by this concept honestly, having circled the globe multiple times and performing everywhere from Tuscany to Tokyo. Allison began singing at age five in her native San Diego, and traversed everything from country to punk, Elizabethan madrigals to radio jingles, before settling on jazz a decade ago. Allison will be joined by long-time collaborators Danny Green piano, Justin Grinnell bass and Julien Cantelm drums for an exhilarating and heart-warming concert of music and stories, and a sprinkle of holiday spirit.
