6:00 PM San Diego Asian Film Festival: Chew the Scene The San Diego Asian Film Festival — the largest showcase of Asian cinema on the West Coast — kicks off its 20th year(!) with the sixth annual Chew the Scene launch party. "This year, I have seen the emergence of exciting culinary concepts in San Diego, bringing together Filipino and Mexican sensibilities, or Vietnamese and Korean flavors," says Brian "Emeril" Hu, Pac Arts' artistic director. Thank Ozu that more thought goes into Hu's ability to book titles than event-naming. C'mon, Pac Arts Movement: throw a bit of wit into the mix. Surely SDAFF could get away with calling it "Chu the Scene" or even "Chow Yon Fat;" "Chew the Scene" sounds more like the Reader's annual food issue. Still, who cares what it's called? With over 20 participating restaurants, the chances that you'll leave hungry are slim.

Admission/Cost: $40 - $80

7:00 PM Film: Days of Abandonment Olga's life is shattered when her husband abandons her. This prompts her to fall into a period of self-degradation and self-destructive behavior. The attractive forty-something mother of two was still very much in love with her husband, but he became restless and distant, and eventually left her for a younger woman. At first Olga is in denial and tries to win him back, but when she sees him with his new love, who turns out to be a family friend's daughter, she flies into a rage. Having to face the truth, she falls into a deep depression, oblivious to the attentions she receives from Damien, a musician who lives downstairs.

Thursday, October 10 - 7:00 PM
7:00 PM Stage: Picasso at the Lapin Agile The year is 1904. Albert Einstein, a 25-year-old patent clerk, waits for his date at the Lapin Agile, a Parisian watering hole, when 23-year-old Pablo Picasso drops in to meet a recent conquest who is hoping for a return engagement. Einstein is a year away from transforming physics with his theory of relativity and the young painter will soon set the art world afire with Cubism. But at this moment, they are drawn to each other by a mutual sense of self confidence and curiosity. Kept company over the course of their evening by an amusingly incontinent barfly, a gullible yet lovable bartender, a wise waitress, and a surprise visitor from beyond, the two geniuses' conversation bounces like excited molecules and sweeps like bold brush strokes over art, science, love, existence, and the unknown.

Admission/Cost: $10 - $15

8:00 PM Stage: Bad Hombres/Good Wives Don Ernesto, a muy macho cartel lord of Sinaloa, is used to getting exactly what he wants. In this case, what he wants is Eva — the young woman he sent to a convent to be trained to become his perfect, submissive wife. En route to meet her future husband, Eva bumps into Mario, the dreamboat son of a rival Narco capitán, and her heart leaps. Will Mario "rub out" Don Ernesto? Will Don Ernesto "rub out" Mario? Or will there be a double Narco wedding bringing peace to the town? Lust, love and war are in the air, along with lots of festive Mexican banda songs.
