12:00 AM Exhibit: Hanjialin Bao - Between Black and White Since its opening on July 11, 2019, thousands of local and visiting guests have enjoyed Bao's kaleidoscopic works that embrace both East Asian folk art traditions and American comic aesthetics. Her first solo show in San Diego, Hanjialin Bao: Between Black and White features 12 works from two series, Gui (?), 2019-Present, and Liao Zhai Zhi Yi (????), 2016. The characters from Liao Zhai Zhi Yi possess a psychedelic quality reminiscent of the late Heinz Edelmann's (1934-2009) work from cult classic Yellow Submarine (1968). Using vibrant colors, undulating lines, and deliberate stylization, Bao reinterprets the ghouls, fox spirits, and immortals from Qing Dynasty author Pu Songling's novel of the same name. Her more recent series, Gui, incorporates more familiar visual elements distinctly drawn from Chinese culture, such as lion dancing and kung fu. While visually divergent, Bao's subject matter is unified by her focus on the fantastic and mythological in Chinese culture.

"I love traditional Chinese culture. I would be proud to become one of the artists who introduces it to the rest of the globe while contributing to the diversity of the illustration world. Ideally, my works would make traditional Chinese mythology more accessible and entertaining for people of various cultures." - Hanjialin Bao

All of Bao's works are on display in the Hweih Chih and Julia Hsiu Gallery, located in the Museum's Dr. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Extension (328 J Street, San Diego, CA 92101). Each individual piece on display (framed and matted) is on sale for $220 each. General admission to this exhibit is $5, which includes access to the Museum's main building across the street (404 3rd Ave). All guests under the age of 12 are welcome free of charge.

En route to meet her future husband, Eva bumps into Mario, the dreamboat son of a rival Narco capitán, and her heart leaps. Will Mario "rub out" Don Ernesto? Will Don Ernesto "rub out" Mario? Or will there be a double Narco wedding bringing peace to the town? Lust, love and war are in the air, along with lots of festive Mexican banda songs.
