12:30 PM Film: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari At a carnival in Germany, Francis (Friedrich Feher) and his friend Alan (Rudolf Lettinger) encounter the crazed Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss). The men see Caligari showing off his somnambulist, Cesare (Conrad Veidt), a hypnotized man who the doctor claims can see into the future. Shockingly, Cesare then predicts Alan's death, and by morning his chilling prophecy has come true -- making Cesare the prime suspect. However, is Cesare guilty, or is the doctor controlling him?

"Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock & Roll" will screen Tuesday, Oct. 24 from 6:30-8:00 PM

This film examines Cambodia's recent history through its rock music of the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in the genocidal Khmer Rouge's dismantling of the society and murder of two million of its citizens. Combining interviews of surviving rockers with never-before-seen archival material and rare songs, this film tracks the twists and turns of Cambodian music as it morphs into rock and roll, blossoms, and is nearly destroyed along with the rest of the country. Directed by John Pirozzi and Andrew Pope, 95 minutes, USA/Cambodia.

7:30 PM German Art of the 20th Century This October, Cornelia Feye, former director of arts education at the Athenaeum, presents a series of four lectures on 20th-century German art.

Based on the exhibition of the same name at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2009, this lecture will focus on art from East and West Germany, two countries that shared a history but developed two distinct political systems during the cold war era. East German artists produced Socialist Realist work intended to glorify the system. Meanwhile, in the West, artists such as Beuys, Kiefer, Immendorf, Baselitz, and Richter experimented with Neo-Expressionism and performance art.
