The Spring Showcase is one of many year-round programs of the non-profit media arts organization, Pacific Arts Movement (Pac Arts), including the popular San Diego Asian Film Festival.

We believe film has the power to enlighten, bridge communities and change lives. If you love world cinema and rich, independent storytelling, join the movement by becoming a member of Pac Arts. Go to pacarts.org.

6:00 PM Film: Phantom Thread Set in the glamour of 1950's post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutantes and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson's eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis.

7:00 PM Stage: How the Other Half Loves Britain's brilliant comic genius, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, penned a fast-paced and hilariously funny theatrical meal, which stands as a classic modern comedy. It is a portrait of three very different marriages that turns into a spirited game of mixed doubles involving sex, jealousy and ingenious stagecraft that only Mr. Ayckbourn can design. Full of clever, razor-sharp dialogue and impeccable split-second timing and twists, How the Other Half Loves promises to leave you in stitches.

7:30 PM Art: Dialogues in Art & Architecture What will be the lasting images of the occupation of public spaces in cities as diverse as Cairo, Sana'a, New York, Tel Aviv, Madrid, Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro, and San Diego? How will the democratic urban uprisings from Tahrir Square to the worldwide Women's March of January 2017 be remembered? Is there a new aesthetics of resistance? How do the recent occupations of public spaces relate to contemporary artistic practices?

Reflecting on the Gezi Park protests of 2013 in Istanbul, Can Bilsel explores the emerging iconography of resistance in public spaces, often depicted as a lone, vulnerable figure in the public square. He will provide a series of readings of this iconography as seen through the intersecting discourses of secularism, body politic, transgender activism, and resistance to urban gentrification in Turkey. San Diego / Tijuana, where the Americas converge, has proved a fraught site of action and art. Sally Yard will consider projects that have been made in contested spaces of San Diego/Tijuana, from Chicano Park to the Border wall.
