All Day Trinh Mai: That We Should Be Heirs Trinh Mai: That We Should Be Heirs That We Should Be Heirs encourages participants to engage in the lost art of letter writing as a method of alleviating burdens and promoting healing. By putting hand to paper and joining one another in this collective activity of personal letter writing, we can share in this intimate process of privately documenting the stories, hardships, and triumphs that connect us all. Letters written by immigrants and families of immigrants are encouraged. Letters handwritten in participants' native tongues are welcomed and encouraged. Writings by survivors are encouraged. This project includes on-site activities and off-site workshops during which participants will be asked to write letters to themselves and/or others to pay respect to those who have shared in our heartaches and the approaches we've found to quiet our pain. All writings will be rolled and bound with string, and therefore, will remain private as part of the installation.

That We Should Be Heirs aims to offer a hallowed space for the participants to release their burdens and their fears into the art. As more letters are received, the installation will continue to evolve. This project focuses on one of the most profound commonalities that we all have—our desire to heal, our constant search for new ways to alleviate our burdens, our hope to gain victory over fear, and the consistent need to let go of the things that have a way of hardening our hearts.

7:00 PM Stage: The Pirates Of Penzance Jr. Set sail with this classic comedy that boasts one of the most famous patter songs in musical theater history. The wit and whimsy of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic score is suffused with a modern sensibility in The Pirates of Penzance JR., a swashbuckling musical journey!

Set on the rocky coast of Cornwall, England, The Pirates of Penzance JR. begins with a group of pirates who are celebrating the birthday of one of their own, Frederic, who has reached his 21st year.

Finally, having served the full length of his required time with the pirates, he decides to strike off on his own and become an upstanding citizen - which may even mean bringing the pirates to justice. This turns out to be a tricky prospect indeed, especially when Frederic's freedom is called into question!

7:30 PM Music: Aeneas in the Underworld Begun as a collaboration between former San Diego New Music executive director Colin McAllister and composer Christopher Adler in 2006, Aeneas in the Underworld is an ambitious and unique project.

It combines oratory and music for a solo performer who recites the sixth book of Virgil's epic story, the Aeneid, in the original Latin, while playing a guitar (which is subject to drastic retuning, preparations, and playing implements).

The soloist, embodying the extraordinary mastery of Aeneas, the hero, is accompanied by a second guitarist, string quartet, and electronics. The story recounts the hero's descent into the underworld and fateful meeting with the shade of his father, which reveals to the hero the future glories of Rome.

For more details and a list of the performers, please visit the Athenaeum website.
