10:30 AM Discussion: Models of Jesus' Jewishness Jesus lived, taught and died as a Jew. He was embedded in the Jewish world of practice and piety. This lecture will present different models of Jesus' Jewishness as presented in the New Testament narrative. We will looks at texts that demonstrate a Jesus who embodies qualities of 1st century Judaism and a Jesus who fashions elements of charismatic Judaism.

6:00 PM Talk: China in the Wake of the Party Conference Is China the rising world power?

China's recently concluded 19th Communist Party Conference established President Xi Jing Ping as one of the most powerful leaders since Mao, but also moved to institutionalize Xi's political, economic and security policies.

Dr. Shirk is a research professor and chair of the 21st Century China Center at UCSD. She is one of the most influential experts on U.S.-China relations and Chinese politics.

Dr. Shirk's book China: Fragile Superpower helped frame the policy debate on China in the U.S. as well as in other countries.

She dissects the results of the conference and its possible impacts on U.S.-China relations.
