12:00 PM Gallery: Art of the Americas Learn about the pre-Columbian objects presented in "Art of the Americas" from Dr. Janet Esser, art historian, and Professor Emerita of San Diego State University. Dr. Esser has lived in Peru and Mexico, has published books and articles in Mexico and in the United States. She has presented many professional papers written extensively on ethnographically ancient, contemporary, and personal adornment. Dr. Esser is especially interested in the art of the ingenious peoples who occupied the Americas long before the arrival of Europeans. She has also focused her attention on the work of these cultures's descendants who, though often poor and dispossessed, continue to produce work rich in intelligence and inspired with energy. Free with museum admission.

6:00 PM Talk by Taner Akšam on Armenian Genocide On April 23, the New York Times published an article about Professor Taner Akšam's recent work. The article focused on an Ottoman document Akšam states is "the smoking gun," which demonstrates the Ottoman government's awareness of, and involvement in, the elimination of the Armenian population.

The document, acknowledged as authentic by the post-World War I Ottoman government, helped convict its author, Behaeddin Shakir as one of the masterminds of the Armenian Genocide.

However, this key piece of evidence, along with other damning documents used during the post-war Constantinople trials of the perpetrators, vanished. Or so it seemed.

In the course of examining the archives of the late Fr. Krikor Guerguerian, Akšam discovered that the Armenian Catholic priest had made photographic copies of Shakir's telegram and other crucial documents.

Dr. Akšam's talk will be the first time this and other documents have ever been discussed in a public setting.
