All Day Borrego Springs Film Festival A juried, five-day film festival of narrative, documentary, animation, and Latino features and shorts. Films will be screened at the 180-seat Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center. Networking events and parties occur at local resorts throughout the weekend. The promoters say, "We're an old-school film festival. Packed houses and a raucous Q&A are part of the event." There are several international films in the festival.

Runs through January 18. Buy an all-festival pass for $125 to attend every event or get a film block pass ($10) to attend a specific screening block.

2:00 PM Martin Luther King Day Parade Join us for the 38th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. This is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the United States, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The parade is filled with dazzling floats, phenomenal high school bands, drill teams, college fraternities and sororities, churches, and youth organizations.

This parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the oldest African-American fraternity in America, founded in 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Dr. King was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha.

2:00 PM Music: Its About Time Percussion Festival The It's About Time percussion festival opens with a program of works suffused with orchestral color and rhythm. Hector Berlioz's boisterous Roman Carnival contains the Italian saltarello dance at its core. Serge Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 bristles with energy, often driven by inexorable "tick-tocks" coming from the percussion section. Guest soloist and festival curator Steven Schick will be at the center of a virtual menagerie of wood, metal and skin in Roberto Sierra's Percussion Concerto.
