Way of the Qin 2013
A guqin study retreat and cultural tour of China

Entire program: August 1 - 31, 2013
Beijing study program only: August 1 - 15, 2013
Xi'an and Lushan only: August 15 - 31, 2013

Way of the Qin is a month-long summer program that offers participants the opportunity of learning Chinese culture's most iconic and enigmatic classical instrument: the guqin. Way of the Qin will consist of two weeks' intensive study of guqin or "qin" with one of Beijing's foremost experts and scholars in the art after which participants will spend two weeks traveling to important historical and cultural locations in China such as Xi'an, China's ancient capitol city, and a remote daoist monastery deep in the forested mountains of Lushan.

The guqin (a 7 stringed zither), has a rich history in Chinese history, lore, poetry, and art. Participants will receive intensive instruction in this ancient music as well as other arts such as tai ji and calligraphy. All experience levels may participate and no knowledge of Chinese language is required.

Music will remain a strong theme in the following tour where some highlights include:
  • The Great Wall at Simatai
  • Terra Cotta Warriors of Xi
